Meet the Baker Behind Dinky Bakers

I’m Laura — a mum of three on a mission to bring the magic back to learning, one recipe at a time.

Why I Started Dinky Bakers

Laura, founder of Dinky Bakers, with a big smile

My goal is simple: to provide cooking activities that make us look at learning differently. Some children are very academic — but not all, and I know as a parent that can be hard. The aim is to bring the magic back to learning.

I worked in a school for five years as a Learning Support Assistant, seeing lots of children in different situations — and my own trying to get their heads around a tough curriculum. I kept thinking: there has to be a way to support and engage children in learning. Does it have to be textbooks all the time? Above all, our children need to be happy whilst learning. We all know we learn best when we’re having fun.

Alongside that, I trained as a Forest School Leader (Level 3) — and that’s where everything clicked into place. Forest School is built on the same principles I’d been searching for: child-led exploration, learning through real experiences, and meeting children where they are rather than where a label says they should be. The kitchen, I realised, can be that same space.

That’s when the idea for Dinky Bakers took shape — could teaching children the basics of cooking lead to real learning, without them even realising it?

And so Dinky Bakers was born. I’m Laura — a mum of three, on a mission. I really hope I can show you that you’re not alone — and that some of these ideas will help.

More than anything, I want Dinky Bakers to be a place where families can explore food together — fostering a love of cooking through hands-on experiences. You’ll find plenty of ideas to try in your kitchen.

Regardless of your child’s age, this is about what they can do — not how old they are. Age is just a number, and not an accurate measure of what a child is capable of. That’s why none of the activities on this site are sorted by age. Pick whatever you and your child feel ready for. That’s how we build confidence.

Just remember to have fun!
